Nguyen Trung Duc
I am a researcher at the Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA) and a doctoral student at the Mathematical Modeling Laboratory, Graduate School of Bioresource and Bioenvironmental Sciences, Kyushu University, Japan.
My research addresses a practical constraint in crop breeding: turning phenotype into a fast, reliable signal for selection. I combine high-throughput, image-based phenotyping with machine learning to measure and predict crop traits under abiotic stress, then apply these tools to phenomics-assisted genotype selection and germplasm evaluation, beginning with maize and extending to rice, soybean, wheat, melon, and tomato. Beyond the breeding plot, I apply artificial intelligence, large-scale data, and digital technologies to breed and improve crop varieties for climate-change adaptation, and to extend those gains into a broader, more sustainable production value chain.
I have worked at VNUA since 2015 and currently serve as Deputy Head of the Department of Vegetable and Flower Research, Institute of Biology and Agricultural Technology.
40+ peer-reviewed publications (6 in WoS Q1 journals) · 4 released/protected corn hybrids (VNUA141, VNUA191, VNUA168, VNUA81) · 13 research honors and awards, including a JICA/JDS PhD scholarship and a Kyushu University Asia Week Grand Award.
Research interests
- Mathematical Modeling & Simulations: Applying formulas to track, predict, and analyze biological frameworks.
- Phenomics & Genomics: Integrating complex plant trait data with genetic structures to optimize precision agriculture.
- Crop Breeding and Improvement: Accelerating the development of hardier, high-yield crop varieties to combat climate and environmental stress.
- Remote Sensing & Computer Vision: Applying multi-sensor Earth observation and deep learning to map, monitor, and forecast production in perennial tree-crop systems.
Background
I earned my B.S. in Crop Science (Advanced Program) from the Vietnam National University of Agriculture (2015) and my M.S. in Agricultural Science (Plant Physiology) from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-IARI), New Delhi (2021), under an ICCR scholarship from the Government of India. I began my career as a researcher at VNUA in 2015, working on corn breeding, and have since co-developed two officially recognized hybrid corn varieties (VNUA141, VNUA191) and contributed to three plant-variety-protection filings (VNUA191, VNUA168, VNUA81/MH81). I have authored or co-authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications, including papers in iScience, Plant Stress, Frontiers in Plant Science, and Ecological Genetics and Genomics.
